We like the underground idea, as large mass equals good thermal properties.
We do prefer a straw bale or an earthship design to rammed earth because:
Earth buildings are costly in terms of labor. The silt and earthen mixture is compressed periodically in horizontal layers and compressed with air compression beaters and vibration rolls. In case of “House Rauch” 41% of the house’s volume is under earth, which results in some subterranean cave-like spaces. The building’s foundation is made of 60cm trass cement – the traditional roman cement, the ceilings are “Dippelbaumdecken” (beam ceilings) and the interior thermal insulation is made from rush mats, which is also a perfect underground for the finishing coat.

För 8 månader sedan bodde vi i New York, betalade alldeles för mycket i hyra och med en livsstil som gjorde oss olyckliga.

Om jag ville ha lugn och ro fick jag ta tåget 2 timmar bort. Det kändes som om min livsstil var fel, moraliskt och miljömässigt.
Jag började undra hur andra kunde leva oberoende, inte oroa sig över jobb, eller bo i ohälsosamma städer där alla verka olyckliga.
Det såg ut som om folk började leva vid pensionen- när det ägde sin bostad och hade fri tid.
För mig var det för länge att vänta till pensionen. Tänk om man kunde ha ett hus om ett par år, och dessutom leva hälsosamt under dessa år.
Jag sökte på internet efter alternativa livsstilar och hittade konceptet med ekohus.
En boning byggd av återvunnet material som man bygger själv.
Jag kände att Oden och mitt liv var ur balans. Längtan efter naturen have växt de senast åren och varje gång jag hälsade på i Sverige tänkte jag på hur det skule vara att flytta tillbaka. Men jag kunde bara föreställa mig att bo i lägenhet, jobba 9-5 för att betala lånen, stressig hämtning på fritis, handla mat i lysrörljus, och gå och lägga sig efter kvällsmaten med evig förkylning. Och mörkret och kylan. När jag mötte Alex och han visade mig husen som folk byggde själva för så lite pengar såg jag lösningen.

Sedan vi flyttade till Sverige har Oden lärt sig att simma, cykla och ta bussen till skolan själv. Han har inte för en sekund velat flytta tillbaka till New York.

It’s a marsh that you put your sewage in, and it cleans the water.

One problem with this concept is that it requires lots of land. A reed bed might be a viable sewage treatment alternative for a small family dwelling.
Of course the easiest is a composting toilet.
